Chapter Twelve: The STELNAV Trail

Ewing Mountains, Planet Helios, Tau Ceti System

“So let me get this straight,” Gunny mused as he slid the thick hose into a hole on the side of the shuttle. “You shot Colin Hess at a security summit he was personally trying to blow up with MV5 and radioactive ship waste? And based on your knowledge of Hess’s business enterprises, you were led to the Volcker brothers?”

“Something along those lines,” Gresham admitted and helped move an oxygen tank back onto the shuttle after having removed it earlier as they took inventory. “I know it sounds far-fetched.”

“When you eliminate the impossible, whatever’s left, however improbable…” Gunny recited with a chuckle and wiped grease from his brow. “So what’s the plan now?”

“Well, I haven’t quite thought that far ahead, to be honest,” Gresham said and looked up at the sky. The sun was sinking down near the horizon now, casting long, dark shadows up the valley leading to the pile of rubble where Gamma Site had once stood. A small slice of the mining camp’s lower tarmac remained unobstructed by rock, dirt or concrete, and luckily an intact fuel tank stood triumphantly and alone mere feet from a gigantic boulder.

Gresham returned his attention to Gunny. “Why do you ask?”

“Well, you worked awful hard to get all the way out here. Just making sure it was worth it for you,” he answered and cranked up the fuel pump. There was a kick and a gurgle from the hose as the flow started. “Did you find what you were looking for?”

“Well, we found the Volcker brothers, and killed one of them,” Gresham considered. “And I think Zurra found what he was looking for, too…”

Gunny glanced over his shoulder at the dark shape of Zurra, obscured in the shadows, sitting nearly a hundred yards away on a boulder overlooking the valley. The massive krokator had not uttered a word since their return to Gamma Site, leaving Gresham and Gunny to do most of the work.

“The big guy doesn’t say much, does he?” Gunny asked as the hose gave off a slurping sound, signaling that the tank was full.

“No, he doesn’t. He plays his cards close to the chest,” Gresham said cautiously. “I don’t like the feeling that people I’m sticking my neck out for are keeping things from me. First Godford and Paine, now Zurra…”

“Paine as in President Paine?”

“The one and the same. His son Reggie was my commanding officer on Puckshot. Watched him and a lot of other good men die.”

“Well you’re lucky you’re alive today,” Gunny noted. “My old man died at Rimstar. He was a career Navy pilot and was the squadron commander on the Valencia. Eight out of every ten men on that ship were lost.”

“Do you get your affinity for ships from him?”

“When I was younger, yeah. He was an instructor at the flight school on Diocletian. Used to take me up into low orbit with him. I was eligible for the Navy a year after the Dhruiz War ended.
